Black Box

Black Box

Black box is a product with a sole purpose – It can count up and down.

On one side of the box the user can find the counter number, there is no other information, no buttons. Only a number.

I spent a lot of time thinking about a fun and surprising interaction for this kind of product. I decided to use an accelerometer sensor to detect the rotation of the box. If users want to count up – all they need to do is to flip the box to the right side, if they want to count down – as one could imagine – they need to flip it to the left.

When it comes to interaction, I feel there is a lot of unrealized potential in accelerometer and gyro sensors. I originally started thinking about this when the smart watches came out – for some reason the manufacturers force us to use gestures on a small screen rather than using our whole hand as an input device, considering these watches already contain those sensors.
