Time Holes is an iOS app allowing users to accurately place historical images across NYC. The positions are saved in a “spatial archive” which we then can use to reconstruct the past of New York city by creating timeless 3D models of the city.
Augmented reality technologies allow us to present information based on spatial context, Time Holes uses augmented reality to store and tag them. The app pulls historic images from NYC databases. Using street signs as AR markers, the app pulls the GPS coordinates and creates a unique location identifier. Relative to the marker location, users can position the photos in the specific location they were taken at, in the past. The app is was developed using the Unity game engine and the ARKit.
